One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight or get in shape.

With all that motivation at the start of the year, gyms tend to see a spike in memberships. I get bombarded with online ads and even snail-mail promotions from gyms the first couple of months of the year.

Discounted gym memberships can be tempting, but why not work out at home? Check out articles like “15 Simple Ways to Burn Calories Without the Gym.” Or simply pull out your phone.

A host of fitness apps can spare you the cost of a gym membership — not to mention the time and cost of driving to the gym. They enable you to get a workout in as little as seven minutes. Many of these apps are free, too.
