Many brick-and-mortar stores will again close for the Thanksgiving holiday.
In September, and were among the first to publicly announce their closures.
Both chains were closed on Thanksgiving , too. BJ’s noted that this will be the 11th consecutive year its clubs will be closed on Thanksgiving.
Off-price department store chain has also publicly announced its Thanksgiving closure — although the decision is an about-face. Last year, Stein Mart kicked off its Black Friday sale on Thanksgiving, with stores open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the holiday.
CEO Hunt Hawkins explained:
“For 2017 we have chosen to return to our Stein Mart family tradition of not opening our stores on Thanksgiving Day. We are very pleased to give back this important time to our associates.”
Sites like and , which are devoted to Black Friday sales events, recently reported on other stores that will be closed on Thanksgiving. The major chains include:

Stores that will be open on Thanksgiving
As was the case last year, Macy’s was among the first retailers to make headlines for its plans to be open on Thanksgiving.
Last month, a Macy’s spokesperson :
“As we do every year, we surveyed our store associates well in advance, giving them an opportunity to tell us their preferences, and we staff Thanksgiving with associates who volunteer. Additionally, associates who work any shift on Thanksgiving Day will be compensated with overtime pay.”
Video game chain GameSpot has also that it will open on Thanksgiving — which marks a change from prior years.
