This Midwestern state saw the largest shrinkage of its Generation X population between 2010 and 2016 — a 4.2 percent decline. Illinois is one of the region’s weakest economic links, according to an prepared for the state government in January. This is the result of slow job creation and the state government’s fiscal problems. The report cited weakness in the manufacturing sector, which has contributed to unemployment.
